Have an envelope or bag to keep all of your planning and travel documents safe.

Be sure to have copies of your prescriptions or extra medication with you. Don't forget the sunscreen, immodium, allergy meds, analgesic, and anti-acid. A first aid kit is good, too.

If you are traveling with children, have a variety of things for them to do in the car.

Google "road trip games for kids" and print the listings. Keep them in a folder in the car. Go low-tech, so that you don't have to depend on technology.

Keep a list of your reservations and how you paid for them, just in case you need to change or cancel portions of your trip.

Know the cancellation policies of lodging that you book. If you need to cancel, do it in a timely manner. This will help you get your deposits back. Don't wait until the last minute and lose money!

My road trip to the great southwestern U.S. got scuttled because of health issues. I've been reading about Valley Fever, and now I'm not quite as sad about not going.

Take healthy snacks with you. It is more cost effective, and you won't eat as much junk. Grapes and apples work well. Kashi bars are my favorites. I love the Chocolate Almond Sea Salt ones.
