To my mind, one of the best poems of all time...

If by Rudyard Kipling

If

A fantastic article Asha. Brilliantly written, it described Rudyard Kipling's poem so well, and the feeling and thoughts behind it. 'If' is, and always will be, inspirational.

It was one of my favorites too, and after being given a copy used to have it hung up on the wall as something to aspire to.

Can remember moaning to my father that it was aimed at a boy, and he said no not really, it was meant for anyone who was not content to just sit around but wanted to develop themselves and their lives, and when it was written girls in his circle were not really supposed to have 'character'. That if Kipling had written it later then no doubt it would have been worded differently. As someone who was regularily chastised for being a 'Tomboy', that answer satisfied me. smile

Thank you Francine; that article flowed really easily and made me think I might do more on poems that speak to me - Anthem for Doomed Youth, The Hollow Men, Robert Louis Stevenson's A Childs Garden of Verses, Thomas Hardy's Neutral Tones - I think I'll soon have a have a long list!

I like your father's response about the poem, after all famous women writers including the Brontes and George Eliot used mens names because they felt they would be more likelty to be taken seriously than if it was known they were women...
