I am admittedly ignorant when it comes to quilting so please, don't be harsh if I ask really ignorant questions. I inherited what I think is called a quilt top from my grandmother when I was born. She passed away before I was born and didn't live long enough to finish it. I have kept it for 54 years now and have decided I have to do something with it. It is in the style that is called a friendship quilt where I live but have heard it referred to as a crazy quilt in other parts of the country. It is done entirely in satin. Blue, white and pink with small floral patterns. The squares of irregular pieces are about a foot square. They are embellished with what I have heard called a 'turkeytrot' stitch. They have all been joined together and the entire top has been attached to a flannel backing. So what I have is a lovely top affixed to a flannel back. I would LOVE to finish this quilt. It is so beautiful but I have NO idea what I need to do next. I am not interested in making it a heavily filled quilt. I will most likely want to use it as a bed overlay or perhaps even hang it. I do sew clothing, curtains, pillows etc and some crafts. But I am terrified that I will ruin this piece. I have thought of just using an appropriate sized bedsheet as the backing on it or perhaps a light prequilted fabric. I have NO idea how to attach what will be the back of the quilt or how to finish the edges. Any and all ideas and help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read and answer.

Dear Bluewillow, First of all, take it, if possible, to a quilt teacher. I would appreciate seeing photos of the top. And think white. Think white borders. or deep blue. I think it will do.

Bluewillow ~ A 100-year old quilt top is not the item on which you want to learn about quilting. Find a Quilt shop, a guild, or an instructor; and have a experienced quilter finish it. You do not want to turn a 'priceless family heirloom' into an 'old bed covering'. They will have the answers ~ they will take your ideas into account, yet do what needs to be done in the proper manner.

Good Luck!
