Here are some ways to beat high gasoline prices. Get the most mileage for your money, using your head, instead of your wallet. Save on Gas for your Car Do you do any of these things? Do you try to walk, bike or take public transit? Is your car in tip top shape for gas efficiency? Do you group your errands and avoid rush hour traffic?

I am a careful errand planner. I try to do all my running around on 1 day each week. We live in a slightly rural area with no public transportation and few things close enough for walking or biking. If I need to travel to one of the larger cities nearby, I call all my friends to see if anyone needs to ride along to stop by a store on or near my route.
We also limit our grocery shopping to every other week. That doesn't seem like much, but with gas at $3/gal this one thing saves almost $100/year.

That is a great idea about shopping only every other week - it forces you to be a more careful shopper and saves you half a year of weekly trips in the car.
Good on you for also encouraging your friends to carpool with you!
I live in a rural area as well, but i do live close enough to walk to do most of my errands. I also try to run car errands on occasions I am already needing to leave town for some reason.

YEEKS! Gas in So Cal is now at $3.90 a gallon!!
I think it's really time to take gas savings more seriously. I really can do better with walking for errands. I'd like to leave my car untouched most of the week, if possible.
