Our genealogy round-table has been very successful. We meet each Saturday at 1pm for discussions on topics ranging from brick walls, research questions, and lately, the book The Unofficial Guide to Ancestry.Com. The last has been very popular as we learn the ins-and-outs of Ancestry.

We can do that here too but virtually rather than in person. Do you have any questions about your brick wall or do you have any research questions?

Ten people attended the round table on Saturday. We were given a writing assignment; we are to try to discipline ourselves to write a paragraph daily so that we can put our family book together.

We are asked, at minimum, to begin by writing a paragraph about a grandparent; we are also encouraged to write about our first job, best friend, a trip, an ancestor, etc.

I got started last night and wrote a full page.

The round table continued today. We discussed what are we going to do with our original documents. How should we preserve them: paper, digital format and if so tiff, jpg, or pdf?

We spoke about the books that we are compiling - the format, documentation to include, charts and photos.

So much to think about.

Our round table group met today. There were about 10 of us there. The moderator couldn't believe how quiet we were at first but after awhile it livened up.

We are considering opening the library up to the public from 10 until 3 on Saturdays. The round table group meets from 1 until 3 so this would be an opportunity to other budding genealogists.

We discussed today starting up a Special Interest Group (SIG) on DNA. There was an enthusiastic YES to the suggestion. I have my homework to do now. No more learning about DNA by osmosis - I'll have to actively study up on the subject now and try to understand it all.

The group has not had success in writing our family histories. We are discussing this more now and today we talked about setting the stage before we begin - who is in the story, what approach to take to cover perhaps three generations and is it one family line or maternal and paternal lines. We discussed end notes or footnotes, indexing techniques. There is a lot to consider.

The last topic today included our genealogy software programs and what they can do to help us with this project.
