Angie, thank you for this. What an interesting article. I knew that the Earth's rotation has been slowing. There is fossil evidence of shorter days.
At the same time, the Moon is moving away from us. This is no coincidence - it's due to an interaction between Earth and Moon via tides that transfers energy from the Earth's rotation to the Moon's orbital motion. This means that sometime in the very distant future total solar eclipses will no longer be visible from Earth. (It's about a billion years or so, nothing to be concerned about!)
But I hadn't thought about looking backwards at solar eclipses, taking into account changes in day length. I wouldn't have expected 3000 years to make such a difference, as the slowing is very . . . um. . . well, slow.
