Spiders and their webs are everywhere and not just on Halloween. Sixteen of them have been sent into space. How well did the orb-weavers manage their webs? Did the jumping spiders starve in microgravity? What was the big surprise Gladys had for researchers when she returned to Earth?

You sure know how to write a good teaser post to tempt us to read the article, Mona! And what a great piece it is. How fascinating.

Did they mention why two of the arachnids didn't make it through re-entry?

Thanks, Lori. Glad you liked the article.

I read something that touched on Arabella's loss that said they didn't know what had happened. Both she and Anita (who died in space), it said, showed signs of dehydration. But I didn't even see any speculation about Esmeralda.

I don't know how the conditions of re-entry might affect them, but they're small enough - and well-protected - that I wouldn't have expected anything in particular. And although the first one splashed down, the second came in on the space shuttle. I'm wondering how the two jumping spiders will fare on their journey home.

Dragon X splashed down in the Pacific yesterday. I haven't been able to find any mention of Cleopatra and Nefertiti.

Apparently Nefertiti made it safely back to Earth, readjusted to gravity and last week went to live in the Smithsonian. However on December 3rd, the Smithsonian announced that she had died of natural causes. Her species has a normal lifespan of about a year and 'Neffy' was ten months. But I daresay she had had a more eventful life than your average jumping spider.

I'm still not able to find out what happened to the other spider Cleopatra. She isn't mentioned in most of the news stories, though English newspaper The Guardian says she died shortly after touching down, but no details.
