Today is the 55th anniversary of the first living thing to be sent into space. On November 3, 1957 Laika the dog won the hearts of the world, but lost her life in Sputnik 2. You can read her story and some other canine tales in Who Let the Dogs out?

A fascinating article Mona, full of interesting things. Had not heard about J. F. Kennedy and the Pupniks before...........you do come up with some great facts.

Saw a photo of Laika years ago, such a beautiful looking dog. Wonder what it felt like for the people who, having had contact with her obviously, put her in that capsule knowing what type of death she would have. Still I suppose it was at least relatively quick, and in many ways this is still happening in laboratories world wide and every day, not to mention in the making of cheap Chinese Ugg boots.

At least Laika has her place in history, and is thought about and remembered with affection, even by those who were not around at the time.

One of the scientists took her home to play with his children not long before the launch, because he knew she was going to die.

Decades later another of the scientists responsible for training Laika said, "The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We did not learn enough from the mission to justify the death of the dog."
