Leo is a Zodiac constellation and its stars have represented a lion for over four thousand years. Leo contains one of the brightest stars in the sky and one of the dimmest, as well as a selection of spiral galaxies loved by amateur astronomers. And why isn't Regulus the star of summer anymore?

Here is spiral galaxy M96 in the constellation Leo. It's about the size of the Milky Way, some 100 thousand light years across. You can see numerous dust lanes around the core. It's about 35 million light years away and a prominent member of the Leo I group.

What's going on here in Arp 87? Two large galaxies are interacting. There is a bridge of stars, gas and dust stretching over 75,000 light years connecting them. Such interactions are drawn out over billions of years, with the galaxies getting closer, interacting, moving apart again. But eventually they will merge into one.

Some 20 million light years away in Leo is barred spiral galaxy NGC 2903. It's near the top the Lion's head, the part called the "sickle". It's a fairly bright galaxy, so it's surprising that it's not included in the Messier catalog. There's a high rate of star formation near the center of the galaxy. It's not just bright in visible light, but also in radio, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray.

It's the Hamburger Galaxy. That's its nickname - it's properly called NGC 3628. The puffy galactic disk divided by dark dust lanes reminds some people of a hamburger in a bun. What we have here is actually a spiral galaxy, but seen edge-on. It's some 100,000 light years across and 35 million light years away from us. NGC 3628 has close neighbors however, as it's one member of the Leo Triplet that includes two other large spiral galaxies.
