There's a new article up on the Biology Site - Vitamins - How Were Vitamins Discovered?

Most people know that vitamins are good for you, but many don't really understand what vitamins are or why they are needed by the body to maintain good health. Exactly what are vitamins and how were they "discovered"?

Go on and read the article, then come on back here and let's talk about it!

That was a very interesting and informative article. I really enjoyed learning what you taught us there Deborah.

All I can say is I am glad I was not one of the sailors who had to exist only on white rice!

I also now know why my grandfather used the word Limey.

Do you think there are enough vitamins in our food today and do we really need expensive suppliments?

Linda,

I also thought how horrible it must have been to be on the "white rice" ship! That's the sort of experiment on humans that would certainly not be allowed today!

I used to think that, although I'm not the healthiest eater in the world, I certainly was getting all the vitamins and minerals I needed. WRONG! I was recently diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency and put on prescription supplements. The doctor told me that in some cases an individual's metabolism just doesn't process all ingested vitamins and minerals as it should, making supplements necessary.

Who knew? Not me! smile
