The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society has decided to give out two directing awards this year - Best Female Director and Best Male Director. The women nominated are Kathryn Bigelow ("Detroit"), Sofia Coppola ("The Beguiled"), Dee Rees ("Mudbound"), Patty Jenkins ("Wonder Woman"), and Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird").
Why segregate directors based on sex? I will be interested to hear what the winning female director has to say on the subject.
