Hello all,

I really need some help. My Husband loves the name Lachlan (locklan)... like the singer Sarah McLachlan for our son who is due in Feb. I too like the name but I am not sure about the flow with our last name.
His name will be
Lachlan James Fagan..... Lachlan Fagan

What do you think?

How about switching the middle and first names around? That way he would still have the name Lachlan.

I like it. It sounds very enchanting, like in the old Celtic tales of heroes and legends. Would you ever shorten the name to a nickname, like Lach? Lach Fagan sounds very masculine yet beautiful. It is pronounced as Lock, is it not?

Yes, we would call him "lach" (lock) or "lachie"(lockie) for a nick name, but we would use his real name "lachlan" more often. The name is Celtic and it means warrior from over the lakes. The name is very popular in the rest of the english speaking world but almost unheard of here in the USA. I really appricate all the feedback, it's helping me a lot!

I think the flow is just fine, personally. I know dozens of people with that same rhythm to their names (DA-dum DA-dum), sort of a double-trochee.

The definition I know is simply "lake land" (which originally referred to someone from Norway). According to Wikipedia, though, I guess there's also an association with a word meaning warlike, but this isn't part of the original derivation.

Thank you so much!

I think we have decided that his name will be Lachlan....Do you think that most people will be able to pronounce it correctly? When I see this name I think of Sarah Mclachlan and Bach the composer, so it's not an issue for me. Do you think most people will be able to pronounce it correctly? I have asked people at work..... but I am a teacher and most in this profession are fanatics on pronunciation, so they also get it right! I would like to know if people not obsessed with phonetics will "get it"

I think most will pronounce the hard "ch" correctly.

I know someone with a daughter named Maeve--another semi-tricky Celtic name--and she says people get that name right about 80% of the time, which is better "accuracy rate" than I would have assumed. smile
