Many years ago I found myself explaining to a client that a Pow-Wow was NOT dancing in the woods and praying to something other than the Creator. I wasn't offended by her incorrect, and slightly dark suppositions. Like many, she didn't know anything about American Indian culture. Misconceptions unfortunately abound.

My latest article includes general information about Pow-Wows. Knowing a little about an event beforehand frees you up to learn more while you're there. However, there's probably more questions than I could cover in the article. Here's an invitation to ask them.

While my husband doesn't always agree, I firmly uphold that there is no such thing as a "silly" question. So don't be shy! Even if you aren't planning to attend a Pow-Wow and just have a question, please ask. Who knows? The information we share might be the inspiration for a wonderful experience.

Pow-Wow Information for First Timers

When I lived in Albuquerque New Mexico, I attended 3 Gathering of Nations. I was filled to the brim with drum beats and my body actually pulsed. I don't quite know how to explain how I felt afterwords. Honored to be a part of it I guess is close...
Do you know if they still hold the Gathering in Abq each year?

Oh Yes! You can watch the re-broadcast from this April on Powwows.com. It is awesome and certain to bring back great memories for you. Would love to hear about some you can share.

I know that feeling. The Drum takes control of your heart and your entire body is enveloped in the beat. It's so powerful and that feeling stays with me for days.

There is nothing else quite like it!

I like your article, Jane. It is very good information for people who are new to Pow Wow attending. My first Pow Wow was such a wonderful and exhilarating experience because I had someone who taught me the proper ways of an observer. You are doing the same for others.
