Throughout the history of folklore and mythology there have been stories and legends of giants. Phyllis, that is such an interesting article.
If you visited the Netherlands today you'd believe these stories even more, as I see on a daily basis men and women here over 6 and a half feet tall.

Oh my gosh, Susan. I guess it is not as unusual as many people may think to see such tall people. What amazes me though is that there are so many legends around the world about giants on Earth in ancient times, 8 - 12 feet tall or taller! I wonder just how many myths are based on actual facts.

In the 18th Century Phyllis there was a regiment of soldiers in Prussia called the Potsdam Giants, and they were around 7 feet tall.
Am a 'shrimp' in Germany at 5ft 3in, spend my time craning my neck upwards, or teetering around on massive heels.

I'm reading the George R. R. Martin series now and that is full of giants north of the glacier edge in a fantasy Great Britain. Though the book does not give exact years, from the textiles in use it must have been set around 500 A.D.?

That seems very interesting, Susan. I will have to look up that series.
I remember reading that the grave thought to be that of King Arthur was discovered in an Abbey. The skeleton of the man in the coffin was well over seven feet long.
I want to do more research on giants. It is becoming more seemingly plausible to me that races of giants truly did exist. It makes sense to me that some people like Johann Kristinn Petursson, Bernard A. Coyne and others over seven feet tall may have had ancestors from a race of giants.

Francine, I also will have to check out the Potsdam Giants. I vaguely remember reading about regiments of soldiers who had to be seven feet or taller. Thanks for the information.
I have three nephews who are all over 6' 4". Makes me feel like a shrimp, too -- since I am only 5' 5" they are over a foot taller than me.
