1. When the Continental Congress of the United States established Thanksgiving in 1777 as a national holiday, they said that the holiday was to "please God through the merits of JESUS CHRIST" (They put in the captital letters.)
2. The heaviest turkey ever raised weighed 86 pounds!

Contrary to popular belief, the Pilgrims did not have big buckles on their clothing, shoes or hats. Buckles didn't come into fashion until the late 1600's.

Hey, this is interesting about the pilgrims - I live near Plymouth - no, not US- Plymouth, England! Shall I go and have a look in the Mayflower Steps Museum - I just got a new (used!) digital camera - would you all like a photo of the real mayflower steps at the Barbican in my local city - hey maybe we could start a cross-continent group, with all the names etc (you have guessed history is yet another one of my passions!)
Here in plymouth ,local families have some of your US setvicemen home for dinner on that day!
Sadly, they had a submarine accident one year and a couple were swept off! It was big news here.
bella is so interesting!
Siobhain new short stories ed - do pop over and see me there!

incredibly I go every saturday,i was there today - i go every saturday to the city library to keep them on their toes about not forgetting to order short stories and to collect rich inspirations for my coaching students.
we love to gaze at the steps, and have even departed from there ourselves for navy dockyard cruises, it is sad to think of the speedwell and ironic to think of difficulties involved with the extra passengers
i think they lodged along the road at the prysten house.

The cranberry got its name because the pale pink blossoms on the plant resembled a crane's head and neck. The name craneberry stuck and eventually became cranberry.

Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird before the eagle was decided upon.

Only tom (male) turkeys gobble. Females make a clicking noise. The gobble is a seasonal mating call.

Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead
