Valentine's Day. Is it a romantic day or one invented by greeting card companies and sellers of luxury goods? It certainly isn't an astronomical holiday, but whatever your view of the day, you can enjoy this selection of cosmic valentines.

Pluto has many fans. And since the New Horizons 2015 flyby, it also seems to have a heart. This picture of Pluto would make a lovely valentine.

How many hearts are there bigger than this heart? it's a feature on Mars that's about 2.3 km (1.4 miles) across at the widest point. Aww, who could resist?

Awww. It's the Heart Nebula IC 1805. It's a cloud of gas and dust lying about 7,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia.

I' ve come across this astro-heart recently. (It was uploaded to Pinterest by Vicki Blake.) It's a heart-shaped collage of nebulae. You may recognize part of the iconic Hubble Crab Nebula image in the top center of the heart.

The Milky Way over ESO's Paranal observatory in Chile. Photographer Julien Girard added the heart by stepping into the field of view with a small flashlight during the 25-second expsure.

On Valentine's Day 2011 NASA's Stardust-NExT mission made a close fly-by of comet Tempel 1. No one actually rendered this in chocolate. However an artist did create a picture of a delicious-looking chocolate-themed space rendezvous

This is the heart of the Heart Nebula (IC 1805). It looks more like a human heart than a Valentine heart.
Quote
This heart glows brightly in red light emitted by its most prominent element: hydrogen. The red glow and the larger shape are all created by a small group of stars near the nebula's center. In the heart of the Heart Nebula are young stars from the open star cluster Melotte 15 that are eroding away several picturesque dust pillars with their energetic light and winds. The open cluster of stars contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of our Sun, many dim stars only a fraction of the mass of our Sun, and an absent microquasar that was expelled millions of years ago. The Heart Nebula is located about 7,500 light years away toward the constellation of the mythological Queen of Aethiopia (Cassiopeia).

Okay, I know Valentine's Day is over, but I've come across this and thought it was sweet. It's the Milky Way in Cabo Raso Argentina. Under this beautiful sky, astrophotographer Sergio Montúfar proposed to his girlfriend Barby. It wasn't on February 14th, but I'm going to count it as a cosmic Valentine.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, apparently Barby said yes - or more likely, sí.
