The Library of Congress announced its 2017 selections for the National Film Registry today. Of the over 5,000 films nominated by the public, 25 were chosen for their cultural, historical, and/or aesthetic significance. I don't know about "The Goonies" (1985) and "Die Hard" (1988). But I'm glad the 1924 film "He Who Gets Slapped", starring Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, and Norma Shearer, was added to the list. A 1905 short that shows the interior of the New York subway also made the cut. "Titanic" (1997) and Christopher Nolan's "Memento" (2000) are among the more recent releases named.

Update: Today, another 25 films were added to the National Film Registry - bringing the total up to 750. The films are chosen, said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, for "their impact on our culture and our history". "Brokeback Mountain" (2005) is the most recent film on the list, while a clip from 1898 featuring African-Americans is the oldest. Buster Keaton and Orson Welles are represented with one film each ("The Navigator" and "The Lady from Shanghai" respectively). "The Shining", "Smoke Signals", and "Hud" also made the cut.
