Once again images of the heavens came to Greenwich. Photographers of all ages had used skill and imagination to image our neighbor planets, visiting comets, colorful nebulae, Earthly skies, and distant galaxies. Nearly four thousand entries came from over ninety countries.

Here is the winner of the Aurorae category - Ghost World by Mikkel Beiter (Denmark). One of the judges wrote that "the aurora’s eerie green glow through the clouds, bending back towards an enigmatic misty shoreline, works on so many levels. Ghost World has definite presence and is a deserved winner."

Andras Papp (Hungary) was the runner-up in the category Stars and Nebulae for his image "One Stellar Day". Using a series of stacked images taken over a period of time, he has captured the star trails of one sidereal (stellar) day.

One of the judges said of it
Quote:
As much as the subtlety of the colours – a dizzying array of turquoise, ochre, maroon or cyan – it’s the precision that is so compelling here. The concentric circles are so perfectly delineated that the result looks artificial, as if drawn by a computer, pixel by pixel.

The winner in the "Skyscapes" category was Passage to the Milky Way by Haitong Yu. The picture is of the outdoor passageway of LAMOST (the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope) silhouetted by the rising Milky Way, in Xinglong Station at the National Astronomical Observatory of China.

Interesting, but have a look at the runner-up and highly commended entries . "Wow!" is what I thought. What do you think?

The Our Moon winner was "Blue Tycho" by László Francsics (Hungary). It's described:
Quote:
On the brownish terra, the crater and its ray system appear as blue-white structures that extend over a thousand miles. The Tycho Crater itself has a bluish shade, which is characteristic of the youngest craters on the Moon.

One of the judges, Will Gater, commented:
Quote:
What I love about this image is how the photographer’s technical skill and artistic eye have come together to create an arresting and unusual take on one of the most recognizable craters on the Moon. This type of saturation-boosted image can be tricky to do well, and this is one of the best examples of its kind I’ve ever seen.
