The kids self check out must be really cool! I haven't seen any of those yet.

I'm probably dating myself -- when I saw the self-check at my local library I was reminded of the first time I pulled into a gas station and had to pump my own gas (a task I still hate by the way!)

I suppose we are all looking for ways to save time during the day -- and self-service at the library saves a few minutes here and there.

Hopefully the books aren't smelly like the gas pump laugh

I'm very particular about the holds being out for patrons to pick up. I do not like having entire last names on books. Since we are the only Laurita family in the state everyone would know who our books are for. The system I like is the first four letters of the last name and last four numbers of the library card number. It's distinctive enough, but doesn't violate patron privacy.

You know Paula, I've never thought of that..
This library uses the entire name and the first 4 digits of the library card are embedded in the id# on the ticket....
I know there are a lot of Dianne Walker's that live in this area. There is Dianne Walker in particular that I never met, but apparently we use the same doctor, sam video stores and she worked for my current employer at one time.
If my name was unique, I wouldn't want it showing like that either.

People pick up their books on hold as well across from the check out counter. I think that is very helpful as you can pick it up and look at it and continue browsing before checking out. We have not gotten the self-checkout equipment yet. I have seen lines but depending on how many machines there are, you may have to wait your turn there as well.

This is a good location for holds. It prevents people from trying to "shop" for the newest books. The system would prevent them from checking them out, but in the meantime they've pulled the book, taken off the paper, etc. Having holds near the circ desk allows staff to keep an eye on them.

I do not like self checking services and have never used one, unless it is the only way to check out I will never use one.
