On this day in 1979 – September 1st – NASA's probe Pioneer 11 became the first spacecraft to fly past Saturn.

Pioneer 11 is now about 98 times farther away from the Sun than Earth is - its final signal was received in 2003.

Viking 2 was one half of NASA's first astrobiology mission to the red planet.

On this day in 1970 – September 3rd – NASA cancelled the last two planned lunar landings.

Apollos 18 and 19 were officially cancelled following cuts to NASA’s budget for 1971. The public had also lost interest after the excitement of Apollo 11.

On this day in 1977 – September 5th – NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft.

It's now 139.6 au from Earth. That's about 140 times farther away from us than the distance from the Earth to the Sun. (Around 21 billion km /13 billion miles)

On this day in 2004 – September 8th – the Genesis probe that had collected bits of solar wind, crash-landed when it returned to Earth.

Some samples were salvaged, as some of the contamination could be dealt with. The mission's major science objectives were achieved.

On this day in 2016 – September 8th – NASA launched OSIRIS-REx, an asteroid study and sample return mission.

The spacecraft isn't due to reach it's target - asteroid Bennu - for another year.

Bond was a pioneer of astrophotography, and the first director of the Harvard College Observatory.

On this day in 1877 - September 11th - English astrophysicist and mathematician James Jeans was born.

He made important contributions to theories of stellar radiation and stellar evolution.
