When a children is reluctant to read, try to start out with books that are quite easy to read. Suggestions for making reading fun:

* if it is a picture book, before reading the book go through and talk about the pictures with the child. Glance at the words on the page and try to mention them while discussing the pictures
* take turns reading the pages
* act out the story if appropriate
* record the child reading - practice first
* when praising their reading, select a specific thing that the child did while reading that was good
* be positive even when mistakes are made
* when stuck on a word, give hints

KHowe, your suggestions were a perfect segue into my article description in the Reading Newsletter. I gave you credit for the excellent ideas.

Even as an adult, I find that the more I read, the more I want to read - it is a snowball effect for me!

Same here, Susan. I never wanted a Kindle, but my husband bought me one as a birthday present. How could I refuse his considerate gift? NOW, I have the world at my fingertips!I can read in my Kindle Unlimited. Downloading free books from BookBub is just a couple of clicks. When my favorite author brings out a new book, I can pre-order it, then I have it right when it comes out. My goodness! This Kindle has made me into a spoiled brat when it comes to reading!

A bit of a funny-sort of: I did not know how bad my cataract was because I could just make the print on the Kindle books bigger. It wasn't until I tried to read street signs to go to a friend's house that I said, "Ooooh, woah!"
