There are 88 official constellations covering the sky with no gaps or overlaps. There are also lots of asterisms, recognizable patterns of stars that aren't constellations. SpaceWeather.com tells us: JUPITER AND THE MOON: After the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look east. You'll see Jupiter and the full Moon rising together in the constellation Virgo. Separated by only a few degrees, the brilliant pair will be up all night long--a beautiful sight. Here is a map of the southeastern sky tonight. Jupiter and the Moon are just within the Spring Triangle formed by the stars Spica, Arcturus and Regulus.

It's the Virgo Cluster in the Spring Triangle. This deep image of the Virgo Cluster obtained by Chris Mihos and his colleagues using the Burrell Schmidt telescope shows the diffuse light between the galaxies belonging to the cluster. North is up, east to the left. The dark spots indicate where bright foreground stars were removed from the image. Messier 87 is the largest galaxy in the picture (lower left).

I saw the Spring Triangle this evening. Jupiter is inside the triangle and since it's very bright, it helps to locate the asterism. Arcturus is tinged with orange. The star nearest to Jupiter is the fainter Spica. (I usually find this low in the sky and cut off by buildings or hills.) Here is a view of last night's sky seen at 9.00 p.m. in Berkeley, CA.
