There are 88 official constellations covering the sky with no gaps or overlaps. There are also lots of asterisms, recognizable patterns of stars that aren't constellations. They have no official standing, but they have the advantage over many constellations of resembling what they represent.

SpaceWeather.com tells us:
Quote:
JUPITER AND THE MOON: After the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look east. You'll see Jupiter and the full Moon rising together in the constellation Virgo. Separated by only a few degrees, the brilliant pair will be up all night long--a beautiful sight.

Here is a map of the southeastern sky tonight. Jupiter and the Moon are just within the Spring Triangle formed by the stars Spica, Arcturus and Regulus.

This ancient constellation contains black holes as massive as a billion Suns, extrasolar planets and a meteor shower acquired from an extinct neighbor. Its brightest star Arcturus is a sign that spring is here.

Virgo is one of the constellations of the zodiac, and its stars have been linked to agricultural goddesses for thousands of years. This area of sky contains thousands of galaxies, dozens of known extrasolar planets, and is where the first quasar was discovered.

Leo is a Zodiac constellation and its stars have represented a lion for over four thousand years. Leo contains one of the brightest stars in the sky and one of the dimmest, as well as a selection of spiral galaxies loved by amateur astronomers. And what was Regulus's dark secret?

It's the Virgo Cluster in the Spring Triangle.
Quote:
This deep image of the Virgo Cluster obtained by Chris Mihos and his colleagues using the Burrell Schmidt telescope shows the diffuse light between the galaxies belonging to the cluster. North is up, east to the left. The dark spots indicate where bright foreground stars were removed from the image. Messier 87 is the largest galaxy in the picture (lower left).

I saw the Spring Triangle this evening. Jupiter is inside the triangle and since it's very bright, it helps to locate the asterism. Arcturus is tinged with orange. The star nearest to Jupiter is the fainter Spica. (I usually find this low in the sky and cut off by buildings or hills.)

Here is a view of last night's sky seen at 9.00 p.m. in Berkeley, CA.
