Saint Patrick's Day is associated with the shamrock and the color green. Although there don't seem to be any cosmic shamrocks, there are many green phenomena in the skies. Discover a beautiful green nebula, what excites electrons, and why con men sold “comet pillsâ€. Saint Patrick's Day – Wearing the Cosmic Green

It's not an inspiring name, but RCW 120 is a beautiful green ring. It's a region of hot gas and glowing dust in the "tail" of the constellation Scorpius. The ring is being shaped by intense radiation from giant O-type stars in the center of the ring. Photo credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Now here's something you don't see everyday. It's IC 1295 and it looks like a giant green bubble in space. It's about 3300 light years away in the constellation Scutum (the Shield) and it's a planetary nebula. At the center of the nebula is a dying star. Credit: European Southern Observatory

Here's another one for you, Nancy. A number of comets are green, commonly because of a carbon gas that fluoresces in sunlight. Here is Comet Lovejoy in January 2015. Photo credit: Sean Walker and Sheldon Faworski
