Danish director Susanne Bier, who recently won an Emmy for "The Night Manager", is developing a series based on Karen Blixen's memoir "Out of Africa". The 1985 film starred Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Blixen, also born in Denmark, spent seventeen years in Kenya and later gained fame writing under the name Isak Dinesen. Bier, who will executive produce and direct the NBCUniversal series, has said “Karen Blixen defied the male-dominated world at every turn. Despite heavy resistance, she single-handedly ran her farm in Africa...She both found and lost the love for which she had always longed. This opportunity to engage with her enduring legacy is a great challenge and even greater privilege.”
