Valentine's Day is no assurance that love is in the air. Hearts and flowers aren't guaranteed to come your way. You may or may not get one of the billion valentine cards that are sent each year. But heart shapes are everywhere and anyone can admire them. Here is a cosmic selection for everyone.

Valentine's Day. Is it a romantic day or one invented by greeting card companies and sellers of luxury goods? It certainly isn't an astronomical holiday, but whatever your view of the day, you can enjoy this selection of cosmic valentines.

On Valentine's Day 2011 NASA's spacecraft Stardust-NExT made its rendezvous with comet Tempel 1. An artist created a chocolate-themed vision of the meeting between the spacecraft and the comet.

On February 12, 2001, NASA's NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft landed on asteroid 433 Eros, less than 48 hours before Valentine's Day.

Eros was named after the god of love, the son of Venus. It looked as though there was a heart-shaped depression on Eros when NEAR first arrived, but it was a trick of the light and viewing angle. It was just three craters.

This Heart-shaped feature in Arabia Terra on Mars was photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It's about 1 km (0.6 mi) long.

I know that Valentine's Day is past, but I just came across a Valentine from the Cassini mission. I quite liked it and wanted to share it.

The Valentine will be irrelevant by next year because the mission ends in September with the spacecraft plunging into Saturn's atmosphere.
