Volans (the Flying Fish) flees from its predator Dorado (the Mahi Mahi) across the southern sky. They're two of the southern hemisphere constellations that Flemish astronomer Petrus Plancius (1552-1622) created to fill in parts of the sky not visible to northern astronomers.

This is the constellaiton Volans represented by Johann Bode in his 1801 atlas Uranographia. You can just see part of Dorado close behind Volans.

I've seen groups of flying fish and it's an amazing sight. Here is a photo of a school of flying fish.

About 60 million light years away from us in the constellation Volans is the spiral galaxy NGC 2397

Look at the colors in the galaxy. The outer spiral arms hshow a lot of blue - this shows that there has been recent star formation. Hot young stars are blue. In contrast to this, the nucleus of the galaxy is more of a red-yellow color. This is because these are much older stars.

The galaxy was discovered by the English astronomer and polymath John Herschel in 1835.

NGC 2442 is a galaxy in Volans. It's a distorted spiral galaxy about 50 million light years away. There are

obscuring dust lanes, young blue star clusters and reddish star forming regions surround a core of yellowish light from an older population of stars. The sharp image data also reveal more distant background galaxies seen right through NGC 2442's star clusters and nebulae.
