The Moon Museum is a fusion of art and science wrapped up in the excitement of space exploration. But what is it? Does it really exist? Can we visit it? Here is an unusual story from the days when men walked on the Moon.

The PBS History Detectives tried to find out who was the engineer who placed Moon Museum on Intrepid (the Apollo 12 lander), the mysterious John F. Some people have suggested who it might be, but no convincing evidence. Waldhauer - who knew - had died in 1993, so couldn't help PBS in 2010. Probably "John F" is also dead, or very publicity-shy.

Here is a picture of the telegram confirming that the ceramic wafer was in place.

If "Moon Museum" made it to the Moon on the Apollo 12 lander, here's where it is. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) photographed the Apollo 12 landing site in 2011 from a low lunar orbit. They named the lunar lander "Intrepid" and the descent stage - as with all the lunar modules - served as a launch pad when the astronauts left the Moon. So you can see it in the photograph.

Here is a picture of the multiple of the Moon Museum owned by New York MOMA. The photo is, of course, much larger than the object. It's currently on display in the Tate Modern in London as part of a Rauschenberg retrospective. I saw it there a few weeks ago - it was the inspiration for the article.
