Hollywood's historic Egyptian Theatre, built in 1922, will soon be able to screen 35mm nitrate film prints due to a film preservation project. Cellulose nitrate film stock was standard before 1951 and although movies survive in this form, they are rarely seen. The project is being co-sponsored by Martin Scorsese's organization, The Film Foundation. In Scorsese's words, 35mm nitrate film has a luminosity and richness that is unmatched by any other format.
