The International Dark-Sky Association says: Created in 2003 by high-school student Jennifer Barlow, International Dark Sky Week has grown to become a worldwide event and a key component of Global Astronomy Month. This year celebrations begin Monday, April 4, and run through Sunday, April 10.
In explaining why she started the week, Barlow said, “I want people to be able to see the wonder of the night sky without the effects of light pollution. The universe is our view into our past and our vision into the future. … I want to help preserve its wonder.†Resources for dark sky campaign.

Light pollution isn't just a problem for astronomers. It means the loss of an amenity for all of us now and the generations that follow. It affects the natural world, can ruin our health, wastes resources, and what's more, we're paying for it!

What if New York City were lit only by starlight? Wonderful image by Thierry Cohen. He used a sky shot from a dark sky site at the same latitude as New York along with a shot of the city. I can see a few problems with only lighting cities by starlight. But there is also a tremendous amount of unnecessary light which is a waste of energy. If it's lighting up the sky, instead of the ground, you can assume it's waste light.

Many businesses - and indeed some householders - seem to think that they're entitled to very bright lighting. Even if this disturbs the neighbors. But overly bright "security lighting" can have an opposite effect. Bright light can make it difficult to see intruders. (Credit: Martin Morgan-Taylor)

What if the San Francisco area sky were a dark one? Here's how one of my favorite cities might look. Thierry Cohen shot the Bay Bridge as "day for night" and then put in a Mojave Desert sky which is at a similar latitude. Though I love this picture, I should note that it wouldn't look like this, whatever the sky was like. This is the old Bay Bridge.

Today is the last day of International Dark Sky Week. But you don't have to stop thinking about how you could reduce light pollution, both on your own and by joining with others.
