What's TOO dressy for a 19 yr old student?
Here's the thing: I've been watching What Not to Wear on TLC and following their dressing rules religiously while doing my back to school shopping. But I feel that the clothes are too dressy for everyday. For example, dark jeans, casual kitten heels, oxford shirt, a velvet blazer, nice cardigans, silky shirts...
So what's the line between being well-dressed and over-dressed for everyday? I don't trust my own judgement, I've been told I'm too 'conservative.' So you tell me!

Not that keen on silky shirts and velvet blazer. Agree too dressy.

Hey,
Seriously, this sounds cliched, but whatever you're comfy in. You can only know what suits you through trial & error (speaking from regrettable experience) & at 19 you're getting used to what suits you & what doesn't. Whatever you feel comfortable in will undoubtably look good. If it feels too dressy, it probably is. Try jeans, some kind of pretty pump - they're relaxed & aren't scruffy trainers or dressy heel. And whatever top feels right.
Hope this helps in some way - although seems a bit vague, nobody can really tell you what to wear, just advise on personal experience.

You should trust your own judgement because you should dress like you want to so that you are comfortable. Only when you go somewhere with a dress code that you should not wear what you want.

It depends what it's for...work, school, girls night out? What's too dressy to someone may be too casual for another. I've been dressing almost completely business casual since about 18. Definitely by 20. Maybe no blazer and not silky shirts but a simpler blouse? Maybe a mix of nice jeans and skirts/slacks or even leggings with the appropriate length tunic.
