A recent study from Florida International University, that was published in The Journal of Abnormal Psychology, found an association between children who are raised by overly critical parents and a lack of resolution of the negative symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder during adolescence.

The negative symptoms of ADD are hard to deal with when you have to do it all day, every day. I think that is why some parents are extremely critical. I am not trying to excuse being cross with your kid, more like I understand a little bit where they are coming from. However, excessive criticism rarely does any good, and usually, it makes a difficult situation much, much worse. Words can lift a child up or tear them down.

Sometimes I think that we don't so much "grow out" of ADD, but that we find ways to cope with the negative symptoms. We develop work-arounds. Often, when we find situations that have bothered us before, we are able to identify the situation and think of a better way to structure what is happening in our lives.
