The original Ninja had their roots in Tibet and China. It was a 'village art' strongly bound up with magick and unconventional combat, as opposed the Samurai ideal of 'honour' and a strict hierarchical structure. Ninja also used psychological warfare against the more numerous Samurai to instil a fear factor in any face-to face encounter.
As a result of this they became seen as the counter-culture, which is usually feared and has all the Jungian shadow of that culture projected onto it. Not helped by some corrupt Ninja who did go into the criminal subculture due to reasons too numerous to go into in a short post. The Samurai ideals reached European and US soil first along with this perception of the Ninja. This was taken up by writers and film makers (particularly in the 80s) and only with the Stephen K Hayes and other researchers/practitioners did a more rounded picture of the origins and history of this particular form of Martial/spiritual art.
I have been practicing Ninpo , as it is more commonly called for a few years now and plan to cover it in an article when things calm down from the spring madness (New babies, run up to Beltaine, departmental re-arrangement at work etc.)

Mine turned out to be Superman - mainly because Ninjas are still seen as the 'bad guys' in comics Hi Ian, why are they still seen as the 'bad guys'? I look forward to reading your article when its published. (JOY)
