A very warm welcome to the Self Development Forum !

What do you feel about irritating and annoying mannerisms? This self development article touches on some common mannerisms that irritate or annoy you. They are often accepted as a persons uniqueness but they can also have a detrimental effect on relationships. Do you know what mannerisms you have?

See: Irritating and Annoying Mannerisms

* What mannerisms annoy or irritate you?
* Do you ever tell the other person about these?
* Have they ever affected your social or work relationships?

I'd love to receive your feedback so do add your comments, queries, thoughts, etc., to this Forum thread. I look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Joy -

That's a great list!

The "um" one always distracts me. I feel public speakers should work hard on tuning their speaking abilities.

Joy,
Great article. I can identify many that annoy me and many that I do which probably annoy others...LOL...

Lisa,
One of the organizations I joined was Toastmasters to get rid of the "um". Now it is very noticable to me when I hear others speaking.

Dear Lisa, thank you for your feedback. Talking about um, I once heard a speaker say this at the beginning of every single sentence during a 45-minute speech. When I mentioned this (gently) to him, he said he never realised he did this. Its funny how we pick up mannerisms without knowing. (JOY)

Thanks to my parents doing anything they can to drive me crazy now many things annoys me (when they do it its more than annoying to me - i have hit myself several times [havent done that a lot since the fire but i still get the urge] you can see their amusement and pride when they see it affects me so i try my best to show that it does not affect me - you can also see the evil in their face when they do it). Before I was only annoyed when people were rude but now I not only am annoyed by the things my parents do I also am when I hear people do it in public and I will also jump when it happens sometimes. One thing they do that is so awful to me that it does not annoy me it disgusts me and also pushes me to my limits, I am even close to being violent sometimes when they do it (its making noise with their nails - they either do it with other nails or with fingers - i cannot stand that noise and thankfully i have yet to hear anyone else do it).
