I have a beautiful collection of porcelain tea cups handed down through several generations. I also have two tea pots that are quite ordinary but to me the sentiment is in who owned them in my family. I also have a wooden tea tray that I display a few tea items on such as bulk tea cans from China and Japan. My grandmother owned a beautiful maple tea cart that she used in her tea room restaurant in the 30's. The cart was left for me and there is a small drawer in one end that I keep a few items in such as sugar spoons, napkins, etc.

Dear Sheryl,

Your collection sounds fabulous~ These things passed down from generation to generation spark memories of fun times and happy get-together's. I'll bet as you use each of these things, happy times come to mind! My children may not know this but all my tea items and cups collections will all be theirs some day~ I hope that they'll find a place in their homes to display/ or use them and recall "this cup my mom brought out for special times...."

Sometimes our collections are not really worth a lot in the dollar column but in our hearts they are precious!

Thank you for sharing!

Dear Tea Readers,

As of July 2014, billionaire Liu Yiqian bought a rare tea cup at Sotheby's Auction~

The very rare 3.1' diameter porcelain "chicken cup", nicknamed this because of its hen & cockerel design, was purchased for

36 million U.S. dollars! The most expensive ever!

This tea cup is an antiquity that there are only 17 of them in the world, it stems from the Ming dynasty in the reign of Emperor Qianlong!

How about that for tea cup collecting!!

WOW -- that's a lot of money for a teacup! I will never ever find a guy like that or for that matter a teacup like that! LOL!

Dear Daisybun,

That sure is one expensive cup and the day he made the purchase
he brewed some green tea and drank it our of the expensive cup on the T.V. channel in his country!

A museum curator went on air to criticize the billionaire saying that the cup is so expensive/so old he should never have actually drank out of it!

My stepdad left me his mother's teacup collection. It's gorgeous. I drink tea out of then and read my own tea leaves.

Dear Readers,

Do you know what the first thing to do if you want to know the value of a tea cup?

#1 Look at the bottom of the cup. Look to see if there is a stamp or marking on the bottom. Also note if there is any "handwritten" type of info. as well.

#2 jot all of it down and then go to google and also to ebay. The value as well as interesting information regarding the cup or its maker may be there.

Have fun collecting!

Dear tea readers,

Did you know that a chawan is a "tea bowl" that is used to drink matcha tea during a Japanese Tea Ceremony?
