What would you do if you were trapped, left behind in space and the closest rescue was years away? If you were the crew that left him behind, would you risk your life to save him? Matt Damon gives a brilliant performance in The Martian.

The Martian Movie Review

I love Matt Damon's acting versatility. What's your favorite Matt Damon movie?

When I read the books, that is how I envisioned the character!

Liked your review. I also enjoyed the movie and thought Matt Damon was excellent. Backed up by a great cast, fast-paced direction and a sparky script.

I've considered writing a review - of the science aspects - but haven't been moved to do that yet. I will say that I could go along with it until the actual rescue. I did not buy that at all. Also wondered if he got off Mars, how long would he live? Mars has no atmosphere or magnetic field to protect against solar storms.

But still at least the story flowed and was plausible for something set in the future. Not like Gravity which was not only scientifically ridiculous, but worse that, complete nonsense in terms of characterization. If these two useless individuals were the Right Stuff, the astronaut corps had definitely gone downhill when they were sent into space.

Mona,
I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie. I think this is a great movie to discuss the science aspect! I look forward to reading that article when you're able to post it.
As far as Gravity, I started watching it, but it was one of those movies I just couldn't finish. :-(

I loved The Martian! The casting was spot-on, the science was fascinating, and the movie was character-driven enough that it seemed to transcend special effects and suspense. It worked for me both as entertainment and as film literature in that it gave me a great deal to think about afterwards.
