Hello all,

Now the time for all good men to come to the aid of The Lemon Tree Society. And because you are reading this you are an honorary lifetime member forthwith and all - no button pressing or registrations required.

The rules of the engagement require that you search out and add tried or not tested tips in life for using lemons in any way, form or manner. Join in please!

LemonDYNs - Lemon-did-you-(k)nows.

You can crisp up skin on roasted poultry dishes (chicken and duck) by rubbing a sliced lemon over the skin before you begin cooking your dish. 80% plus of the time this will ensure delicious crispy skin (not for dieters they say). Of course organic/free range fowl are best.

Cheers now

Something more for the cook and sweetiepie ...

You can sour milk or cream as needed in many recipes by squeezing a little lemon juice into either (the milk or the cream).

and

A few drops of fresh lemon juice added to whipping cream will make it whip up easily.

Cheers for now

Greetings all!

Here is a reminder or a Lemondyn for kids of all ages -

You can play spies, be an artist, write secret messages, set up a treasure hunt … and all with neat fresh lemon juice.

On a piece of paper, write your message or paint your picture using a small paintbrush or cotton bud or even match or cocktail stick – then place the sheet in the sunshine (or under an electric light) and see what happens! The writing will turn brown as the warmth and the light reveals your secrets.

Have fun, this works a bomb at kids parties.

Cheers

Hello Everybody,

Want Blonde highlights?

With lemon juice, you can get them by pouring neat juice over your newly washed hair, combing it through and sitting in the sun (sun screen of course!) until your hair is dry. Then just go and rinse off and do what you normally do to style it.

Repeat as necessary, but it does work.

Cheers

So the lemon doesn't sour the cream then?

Hi Mona,

Yes I see - it does seem daft that in the same post I say you can sour milk or cream by adding lemon juice then I go and say it will help with whipping cream (with no mention of souring).

Here is a recipe I have used time and time again with great results:

Take a cup of well chilled heavy cream and add to it 2-3 Tbs caster sugar, 2 tsp fresh strained lemon juice and about a Tbs of fine lemon zest. Whip it up enthusiastically to soft peak stage (as in meringues) and it will keep fluffed up for up to four hours. Keep covered and chilled, and if necessary, you can give it a final whip just before serving. Use this for cream scones or waffles or trifle or what you will. For some reason it does not taste sour, but light and fresh and creamy.

Having written the above, I do sour cream (if I couldn't find any in the shops) by adding 1-2 teaspoons of lemon juice and mixing. I use this for making a simple baked cheese cake.

Why they both work beats me! Maybe it has to do with quantities?

Please can someone else help?

Cheers

Hello all,

The lemon did you know today is probably one that you do know but here it is anyway -

Add 2Tbsp fresh lemon juice and 1tsp sugar to your vase water (swirl around) to keep cut flowers fresher and to help them last longer.

**DO NOT use this trick for Chrysanthemums or the leaves will go brown.

Cheers

Something else you can do with lemons ...

Use lemon to clean your windows and mirrors. Rub quarter wedges of lemon over windows and mirrors and you can clean and shine them just so. Squeeze the wedge of fresh lemon slightly to release some juice as you go and them immediately wipe the area with a damp cloth. When you have finished the whole area (of mirror or glass) buff it clean with a dry soft cloth (microfiber is a good choice) and you will see a shine to suit!

Cheers

For floors ...

If you have tiled floors, mop them with lemon rind and juice water. The scent is great and it effectively discourages crawling insects and cockroaches.

Creepy crawlies do not necessarily mean that you are a bad housekeeper - they come from all sorts of places. A next door neighbour, cardboard food boxes and supermarket packets, and for weather and water reasons. Lemon certainly helps even though you may have a serious manifestation that could mean you need a harsher chemical intervention. Store your dry goods in glass jars - neat and clean and easy.

Cheers now
