I grew up in Southern California, and I remember going to Santa Monica to sunbathe, play in the ocean, and visit the pier. My mother's last day outside of the hospital was at the pier - she asked me to drive her so that she could see the ocean and spend time people-watching; the next day she was in intensive care for the three weeks before her death.

Obviously, I am sentimental about the area, but I also have experiences rooted in the present day. It's a lovely walk from the pier to Small World Books in Venice and back. Once done, I love to walk to the end, where there's seating for those who like to reflect on the awesome power of the Pacific.
