I find it amazing that so many people know so little about California history, for example. Do you think it's important to know local history as well as the history of one's country?

I wonder when state history got lost from the elementary school curriculum. It used to be a fourth grade thing. I never learned California history because it happened that we lived in Virginia the year I was in fourth grade, and got Virigina history. I can't say that it made much of an impression on me.
Out here, it's hard to associate traditional "American History" with where we live. We are so far from the East Coast that Revolution and the Civil War are abstractions! It wasn't until I started to learn more about California that I began to take American history more seriously.
