I went to a hippy college where everyone experimented with dreads at some point. Well, almost everyone. I got the braids myself but didn't want to go as far as dreading them. it's a lot of work to get them started if you want the nice kind of dreads.

We also had a lot of girls with shaved heads, as that's pretty much what you have to do to get the dreads out, so there was always a cycle of girls with dreads or no hair at all.

Dreads can be well cared for and look very sexy (as in some basketball players' long locks), or can be very dirty, unkempt, stinky and full of 'things.' When they are cut open, lots of dirt falls out.

I have had friends with both kinds of dreads - both the super-hippy matted kind and the formal, even dreads.

I never assume it is a political or/and religious choice when I see someone with dreadlocks I always associate it with fashion.
