Hello Connie and all,

I cut out this snippet of news in one of our newspapers years go (12 April 2012) as reported by Reuters, but came across it again recently in my scrapbook, so I thought you would like to know about it?

...............................................................

DUTCH COOKBOOK LAUNCHED TO STIR TASTE FOR INSECTS

Need more protein in your diet? Try adding worms to your chocolate muffin recipe mix, or spice up a mushroom risotto with grasshoppers.

The Insect Cookbook, published yesterday, contains unusual recipes and is trying to promote insects as a source of protein.

To mark the launch, specialist insect chef Henk van Gurp will try to set a record for cooking the world's biggest grasshopper pie.
...............................................................

Well! It was published too late that April to be an April Fools joke and I must say that I haven't searched to see if it's available on kindle! I wonder who ate any of that grasshopper pie?

Still, here in South Africa a very popular indigenous dish is one of Mopani Worms (fat white sluggy looking things) and no, I do not partake of this fancy fare ... I leave that up to those who do and to adventurous tourists.

Beetle bagels? Cockroach cake? Bee soup? OMG.

Cheers

I found the book on Amazon UK (new hardcover edition in 2014). I won't quibble about earthworms not being insects – or even any kind of arthropod – but whatever their classification, I really can't see myself wanting to add them to chocolate muffins.

BUT more than the subject matter of the book, what struck me about the Amazon page was the prices. The Kindle edition was £2 more than the paperback in the UK and nearly $3 more than the hardcover in the USA.

I wouldn't pay more for an e-book than for a real book. OK, yes, it takes up less space and you can carry the Kindle on the bus. But you can't lend the book to anyone else, even close family, without handing over the Kindle. You can't give it to a friend or to a charity shop when you're finished with it. Surely printing books is more costly than providing an e-book. Does the author get more money from it? (Somehow I doubt that. Publishers aren't known for their generosity to authors.)

What do other readers think?

Lestie, I love your posts! There is always something new and different to think about.

Sweetie, the only grasshopper pie that we serve at our house has a chocolate crumb crust, mint chocolate chip ice cream, and creme de menthe poured into holes poked into the ice cream. It's yummy, and no real grasshoppers are harmed in its construction.
