A tetrad of Blood Moons sounds very dramatic. It could even be the title of a fantasy novel. But what is a "Blood Moon"? What is a lunar tetrad? And is it as apocalyptic as it sounds? Have a look.

Blood Moons and Lunar Tetrads

Nice article Mona. I didn't know that a blood moon wasn't an astronomical phrase. I agree, blood moon sounds better than total lunar eclipse. Has a much more ominous sound and provokes the imagery.

Lunar eclipses are a spectacle, but they also have their scientific uses. Here is a photo showing a red Moon and a green laser beam. The Moon's color tells you it's a total eclipse. The laser beam is aimed at a retroreflector left by Apollo 15 astronauts on the Moon in 1971. From the timing of the return light pulse, scientists can calculate the Earth-Moon distance to a high accuracy. The reflector performs better when the direct sunlight is blocked.

That is so awesome Mona! Thanks for the info. The pic is awesome too! I'm trying to stay awake for the blood moon in my area. I don't think I can. It's around 5 am. Fading fast.

This "blood moon" was also a "blue moon". The eclipsed Moon is a reddish color because the only sunlight it gets has traveled through Earth's atmosphere where the bluer light is filtered out. BUT in the upper stratosphere some of this light also passes through the ozone layer. Ozone has the opposite effect - it filters out the redder light, leaving what's left looking blue. This shows up as a turquoise border on the red coloring. It's subtle, so you'd need a telescope or binoculars to see it.

Thanks Mona! I didn't know that about the blue. I saw it in some of the pictures (I fell asleep before the blood moon appeared in my area), oh drag! I'm going to try to stay up for the next one.
