Thank you xmee. It was indeed over 13,000. I wrote the info in my notes wrong. By August of 1864, the MONTHLY mortality rate was 3,000.
I apologize for the mistake, the correction was made in the article as well.
That number, 3000, bothered me too. 3,000 deaths out of 45,000 are not that astronomical and 13,000 does sound more like it. I should have went with my gut and re-checked it.
