Camp Sumter, or what is better known as today, Andersonville Prison, was built a year before the Civil War ended. It was a horrific prison that was all outdoors and built to hold ten thousand prisoners.

It actually held forty five thousand prisoners in which over three thousand died there. Click on my link to read about the reprehensible conditions and the after math at the end of the Civil War.

Hello Vance,

From what source(s) did you use in saying that "over 3,000" (which I interpret to mean between 3,000 and 4,000) Union soldiers died at Fort Sumter?

The reason that I'm asking is from what I remembered from U.S. History class was the number is approximately 13,000. When I researched it on the Internet every source I located used that 13,000 or so number including the National Park Sevices' website that said "almost 13,000").

Thanks

Well, 13,000 is technically over 3,000. (insert chuckle here)

Seriously though....

Thank you xmee. It was indeed over 13,000. I wrote the info in my notes wrong. By August of 1864, the MONTHLY mortality rate was 3,000.

I apologize for the mistake, the correction was made in the article as well.

That number, 3000, bothered me too. 3,000 deaths out of 45,000 are not that astronomical and 13,000 does sound more like it. I should have went with my gut and re-checked it.

I will check stats more closely now for future articles. Again, thank you very much.
