Neptune's big moon Triton was nameless for over a hundred years after its discovery. And it was so far away that astronomers knew almost nothing about it. Then Voyager 2 visited and saw active ice volcanoes on a moon that is probably a cousin to Pluto.

Astronomers think that Neptune's moon Triton and Pluto & Charon all formed in the Kuiper Belt. The Kuiper Belt is a cold region of icy bodies way out beyond the orbit of Neptune. Pluto has a more pinky color than Triton, but it doesn't have distinct surface features. The lack of features is because the picture was taken from such a great distance. This summer New Horizons will be sending home some close-ups.

In this graphic we can see the comparative sizes of the larger moons of the Solar System. Triton is seventh in order of diameter. And it looks pretty small compared to Ganymede and Titan. One of the interesting things here is that it shows something about an object that's not on the graphic: dwarf planet Pluto. That's because we know that its cousin Triton is slightly larger, so it means that there are seven Solar System moons that are bigger than Pluto.
