Hi Connie,
Gee but this sounds delicious and I shall definitely try it - and while it seems daft to tell, at one of my jobs way back when there was a nearby café that made roast lamb stew and potato jaffles which were a regular delicious lunchtime buy ... pretty detrimental to our collective waistlines!
Scrumptious nevertheless.
Do you own a jaffle iron?
Cheers now

Hi there Sarmie Society members,
Another great hit from those days was a savoury mince and avocado jaffle! Ah what memories!
Growing up and going camping with jaffle sandwiches made the mosquitoes and frogs almost worthwhile.
Cheers now

Lestie, as always when you post, I am intrigued. What is a jaffle?

Hi Connie,
A jaffle iron would give similar results as it were, as a sandwich toaster I would say, BUT oh my, there is just something about using a jaffle iron that makes the contents tastier. Of course this could be imagination too as well as the fun of making them.
Essentially it is a long handled steel cooking utensil (nowadays they come in fancy shapes and Teflon coated) with rounded ends into which you place your buttered and filled sandwich. You then clip it closed and roast/toast it on an open fire as in camping or at a barbecue. The sandwich is sealed.
Most outdoor equipment and supply companies would sell them I would say, and really, if you have a chance to go 'camping' anywhere ... even in your back yard, then do so. Make a campfire, sort out the tents and enjoy making and eating your scrumptious jaffles. Big kids and small kids will love it - something to look forward to when the weather breaks for those still snowbound and all.
The jaffle iron has long handles for you to be able to place it directly on the fire and turn and turn about as it toasts. When it starts to sizzle you can guess that it is done. Let your taste buds be the boss on this occasion.
Much better than any toasted sarmie by very far!
Cheers now

Okay, Lestie! You've got me hooked like a big old fish. I ordered a jaffle iron from Amazon. I'll let you know how it works out! Do I sense a review...hmmmm?

Hi Connie and all other potential Jafflers!
Here are some more thoughts on jaffles.
Use standard white or brown bread - fancy whole wheat loaves etc. don't work as well.
Fill the sandwich with a lot of filling - a thin slice of cheese with a layer of tomato will not work for jaffles - the ingredients are good but need to be piled high - a single jaffle makes a meal if served with a salad.
Once you have closed the jaffle, trim off the crusts and share with the birds. Do not cut the bread to fit the jaffle before you close it - the sandwich may not seal.
Make sure you 'butter' the outside of the bread well (the side that touches the jaffle iron) as you don't want your jaffle to break when removing it from the iron. Buttering well doesn't mean lots, it means smoothly and all corners covered.
Use your nouse when it comes to some combinations of ingredients. For instance, bacon should be precooked as with onions and so on.
My tip for tomatoes is to put them in the middle of whatever else you are using or the tomatoes may water and spoil your jaffle. It will taste great but will look funny!
Use salt and pepper before you close up - afterwards it is just not the same.
I am sure there is a lot else I can say and others too when you get going, but enjoy enjoy enjoy - that's the best ingredient.
Cheers now

Any tips for cleaning the paraffin off of a new jaffle iron?

Hi Connie,
Paraffin? Can't think why it came with paraffin but since paraffin is oil-based then I recommend hot liquid-dishwashy water then rinse in fresh lemon or white vinegar water.
Let me know if this works, thanks

We seem to be on the same page with this. That's what I was thinking. Plus, I'll use a stainless steel scrubby with the hot dishwashing soapl

Mix mayo or ranch dressing, horseradish, and a little bit of whole grain mustard and serve it on a pretzel roll. Yum!

After you've had your big roast beef dinner and sandwiches made from roast beef, you can turn the rest of it into vegetable soup to eat with toasted cheese sandwiches.
