I'm thinking of using a new cover for my Sutton Massachusetts mystery series. Some people who are downloading it currently think it'll be dark and "thriller/suspense" based on the current cover. It's more of a gentle, contemplative romance. So I'm aiming more for that vibe. Thoughts? Suggestions? #mysterynovel

Lisa,

Although I like the new cover (and especially the "tree" pose), it doesn't quite suggest to me that it is a mystery. I do see how people would interpret the original cover as being a darker novel.

I wonder if you could use the same basic style of cover as the original but infuse it with more sunlight or sunshine. Something to reflect the more reflective mood of the story and lighten the projection of suspense.

Aspen Allegations is a superb mystery. I just don't feel the new cover quite meets with the book though.

Hope this helps.

The new cover is cute, but it suggests a comic novel to me, rather than a contemplative romance. Though the trees do figure in the book, the current cover is somewhat darkly mysterious. Perhaps if you have a picture of trees by the lake, that would open out the view. And the lake is important in the story too.

The challenge is that I'm not an illustrator smile. All I can do is assemble stock images I find in a mosaic of sorts. Building a lake is quite beyond my ability!

I had to incorporate yoga in the image. I was getting complaints that there was too much yoga in it, from people who expected a more "straightforward mystery." I need to make clear to potential readers what they're going to get.

I also like the romantic hearts and pair-of-birds, to show it's a romance.

Here's what I ended up with, which hopefully gives a more mature, serene vibe.

I like the way she's now framed by the trees, since the writing is up under the title. Yes, there is a feeling of romance, but also that the heroine is a thoughtful adult woman, not a teen-to-twentyish one.

I see what you mean. I think this cover will work well. I just looked at the cozy mysteries on Amazon and this style fits. I like the seated pose better than the tree pose because it sets the trees higher in the background, making them look more like trees.

Best of luck with the new cover.
