The largest and most deadly fire in the United States at the time occurred in Wisconsin and wiped out two towns and hundreds of people. It happened on this day in history in October 7, 1871. It was the largest fire in recorded history and yet was overshadowed by a smaller fire on October 8, 1871. This fire was to be known as the great Chicago fire and started in a barn on the O'Leary farm.
