NASA's MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) was launched several weeks ago. There's more about it in the thread "Where did Mars water go? MAVEN may find out!"

Mangalyaan (Hindi for “Mars craft”) is a nickname for the Mars Orbiter Mission sent by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Although India's Chandrayaan 1 mission went to the Moon, MOM is its first interplanetary mission. It was launched before MAVEN, but until last week was in Earth orbit. It's now on its way to the red planet. Infographic about MOM.

MOM was launched into Earth orbit and gradually boosted into higher orbits, eventually into the trajectory that would take it to Mars. While it was in orbit scientists tested some of the systems, including the Mars Color Camera. When it's orbiting Mars it will be able to image the red planet and its moons. This picture was taken of Earth, centered on the Indian subcontinent.

On February 12, 2014, India's MOM craft had spent 100 days in space since its launch. It's due at its destination in September.

India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is just a month away from going into orbit around Mars. That's due to happen on September 24. The spacecraft is on course - a correction scheduled for August was cancelled because it wasn't needed.

Hope MOM doesn't run into a traffic jam! There are already three Mars orbiters in operation and NASA's MAVEN is also due to arrive soon.

I've merged an older thread with this topic. It has links to tell you more about the mission dubbed Mangalyaan ("Mars craft" in Hindi) by some in India.

This morning India's Mars Orbiter Mission was successfully inserted into Mars orbit. This makes India's space agency only the fourth successfully to place a spacecraft in orbit around the red planet. There are now five Martian orbiters in operation, including NASA's newly-arrived MAVEN.

India has not only joined an elite club with MOM's arrival, but is the only country whose Mars mission was successful on the first attempt. (Of course, it had a bit of an advantage, since the Soviet and US attempts were in the very early days of space missions and rather hit or miss.)

This is certainly an achievement to celebrate.

India is being congratulated not only for getting its orbiter to Mars on the first try, but also for doing this on a strict budget. In fact, it's been noticed that some popuar movies about space have cost more than the Mars Orbiter Mission.

Elizabeth Howell of Universe Today has been doing the math! She's used the budgets listed in the Internet Movie Database and adjusted the older films for inflation.

Here are some from her list. (There are also space movies that were cheaper.)
Avatar: $263 million ($237 million in 2009 dollars)
Wall-E: $199 million ($180 million in 2008 dollars)
Mission to Mars: $124 million ($90 million in 2000 dollars)
Gravity: $102 million ($100 million in 2013 dollars)
Apollo 13: $101.5 million ($62 million in 1995 dollars)
Mars Orbiter Mission: $70 million (2014 dollars)

WOW for MOM! Have a look at this great picture of the red planet. It shows a lot of dust whirling around the northern hemisphere. I bet NASA's glad its rovers aren't in the middle of all that! You can also see the Martian south pole.

MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission) has, as you'd expect from a busy MOM, been working hard in orbit. ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has recently released a selection of photos. Here is one of Valles Marineris, an enormous canyon system that would dwarf the Grand Canyon in Arizona. If we put Valles Marineris in Los Angeles, it would stretch all the way to Charleston, South Carolina.
