We can't recreate on Earth the microgravity of space or the conditions of Mars. However there have been a number of experiments studying the physical and mental health of an isolated "crew" in simulations of a deep space mission. Perhaps the most ambitious one has been Mars 500, a Russian project, which simulated a 520-day Mars voyage.

Thanks for the suggestion, Peter. I've added it to my book list.
