India is being congratulated not only for getting its orbiter to Mars on the first try, but also for doing this on a strict budget. In fact, it's been noticed that some popuar movies about space have cost more than the Mars Orbiter Mission.
Elizabeth Howell of Universe Today has been doing the math! She's used the budgets listed in the Internet Movie Database and adjusted the older films for inflation.
Here are some from her list. (There are also space movies that were cheaper.)
Avatar: $263 million ($237 million in 2009 dollars)
Wall-E: $199 million ($180 million in 2008 dollars)
Mission to Mars: $124 million ($90 million in 2000 dollars)
Gravity: $102 million ($100 million in 2013 dollars)
Apollo 13: $101.5 million ($62 million in 1995 dollars)
Mars Orbiter Mission: $70 million (2014 dollars)
