Sometimes the media are full of stories about a supermoon. They may even include dire predictions of earthquakes, tsunamis and other disasters. What is a supermoon and should you be worried - or excited?

What Is a Supermoon

During every lunar orbit of the Earth has a perigee (nearest point to Earth). And it's not uncommon to have this occur very close to the full or new Moon.

The next full Moon at perigee is the night of June 22, the day after the summer solstice!

Here's a picture from May 2012 when there was a "supermoon": Supermoon over Paris Fabulous picture of the full Moon and the Eiffel Tower.

It's an example of how the Moon looks huge in pictures taken at some distance from a foreground object. Very effective photo, but looking up at the sky, we're not going to see the Moon look like that.

Full Moon without illusions or perspective effects: Full Moon over New York seen from New Jersey

It doesn't look all that big.

I've seen this in several places on the internet. Did anyone see the full moon this month? Was it really 5 times bigger than usual? If so, gotta have my eyes tested!

It wasn't your eyes. My husband wanted to snap some pics of the supermoon but cloud cover got in the way here. I still wanted to see it and we noticed that it did not seem especially large.

Somewhat disappointing.

In 2014 there are 5 supermoons. Four of them have already been - and without incident. The August full Moon was, I guess, the super supermoon. The others four are full Moons that occurred close to the time the Moon is nearest to the Earth for that month. The August one occurred when the Moon was at its nearest to the Earth for the year. The technical term for the time when the Moon is closest to the Earth is lunar perigee.

Here is a particularly nice photo of August's full Moon taken by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.
